What Are Mealworms?

Mealworms are the larval stage of the Darkling Beetle.  Darkling Beetles have a 4 stage life-cycle, starting with egg.  Then growing into the larva (the actual mealworms).  Then the pupa.  And then finally transforming into the Darkling Beetle.

Pets that Love Mealworms

  • Bluebirds
  • Bearded Dragons
  • Fish
  • Frogs

Mealworms offer a similar amount of protein when compared to crickets.  But the drawback is they have nearly twice the amount of fat as a cricket.  So unlike crickets, mealworms should not be a main staple feeder for your pet.  Instead, they should be offered on an irregular basis.

They are great for brumating pets, who need some additional fat reserves.  And they are also good for pregnant pets.

Only feed mealworms to bearded dragons 2 years and older.  Mealworms have a hard exoskeleton known as chitin, which is difficult for young bearded dragons to digest.  Poor digestion can lead to impaction.  And impaction would justify a trip to a local veterinarian.

How to Store Mealworms

Ordering mealworms online is the easy part.  The difficult part is knowing how to store them.  After receiving the mealworms in the mail, the owner will want to get a plastic container.  This plastic container should be about the size of a shoebox for 500 mealworms.

Once the plastic container is secured, the owner will need to apply bedding material.  Oatmeal, brand, or wheat are excellent bedding materials, because the mealworms can also eat any of these substances.

But they will need hydration.  Don't apply water, because it can promote the growth of mold in the container.  So the better option is to drop in some slices of potatoes, or oranges, or apples, or any fruit or vegetalbe that is juicy.  This will help gut-load your mealworms, and ensure their survival.

Unless you're trying to breed them, mealworms should be stored in the warmest part of the refrigerator.  This is usually the door.  The refrigerator will cause them to go dormant, which will prevent them from transforming into the pupa stage.  It is good practice to feed them before putting them in the refrigerator.

How to Dust Mealworms

When offering mealworms to a reptile pet, like a bearded dragon, it's important to dust them.  Dusting an insect is when you powder them with a calcium supplement.  This calcium supplement will help ensure the bearded dragon doesn't supper from metabolic bone disease.

Dusting is simple.  Place a few mealworms in a plastic bag.  Then pour in 1 table spoon of the calcium dust.  Then gently shake the bag.  This will dust the mealworms.  Then you can offer the mealworms to your bearded dragon.  But remember that mealworms should be limited to bearded dragons 2 years and older.  Their chitin is difficult for them to digest, which can lead to impaction.  Superworms are typically a better alternative for bearded dragons.

What size mealworms should I order?

As a universal rule of thumb, the size of your pet's food should equal the distance between their eyes.
