Hornworms Sizes - Important

All hornworms are shipped at the same size.  When you receive your hornworms, they will be about 1/2" - 1" in length.  They are packages with enough food to allow them to grow to either mediums sized, or large size.  Please be aware of this when after you receive them.

Which size hornworm should I buy?

what size hornworms should i buy?

Hornworms are well known for their size.  So it's important to make sure they are not too big for your pet.  The rule of thumb is that the feeder insect should be no larger than the space between your pet's eyes.  This means they can safely consume and digest the hornworm.

Because hornworms grow rapidly, you'll want to make sure your pet can handle larger sized feeder insects.

How should I store my hornworms?

This depends on your intention for the hornworms.  If you keep them at room temperature, they will continue to grow.  And eventually, they will pupate before transforming into a sphinx moth.

Hornworms are in the larval stage, and to prolong this stage, you'll want to keep them at about 55 degrees.  If you keep them above 80, they will morph faster into a pupa, which is typically 1-2 weeks.

How many hornworms should I feed my reptile?

Hornworms have an ideal amount of fat and protein for your pet.  However, they are an understudied feeder insect, and the amount of calcium to phosphorus is unknown.  Therefore, it is wise to dust them with calcium powder prior to offering them as food.

The cost of feeder insects is generally correlated with how quickly they reproduce.  Because hornworms have to go through a metamorphosis (similar to superworms and black soldier fly larva), they are going to breed more slowly.  This is why they are more expensive than roaches and crickets.

Using them as a staple feeder can get pretty expensive.  And because their natural calcium content is not well known, it would better to use them as a supplemental feeder.  Alot of bearded dragon owners use hornworms to stimulate their pet's appetite.  Their bright blue color will often get their pet's attention and stimulate their natural striking instincts.

Which reptiles eat hornworms?

This really depends on your pet.  But bearded dragons and leopard geckos are going to be the most popular predators.

What is the nutritional profile for hornworms?

Hornworms are 58% protein and 20% fat.  They are light on the fat for your pet, so you'll want to offer fatty insect as well like superworms.

Hornworms compared to dubia roaches

Here is a guide that compares the nutritional profile of hornworms to dubia roaches.  As you'll see, hornworms have some good nutritional qualities.  But they are under studies and would be better suited as a supplemental feeder instead of a staple feeder.
